Geneaology
Know who these gentlemen of leisure from
Ardlussa are? We do (its the 1920s for a hint!), and they are
a small part of the unique
genealogical collection housed at Feolin Study Centre. Read on to
know more!
The Feolin Study Centre is now beginning to
make available, in digital format, genealogical
information from the hand-collected archives of Rev. Peter Youngson and
the late Gordon Wright. Rev. Youngson was the author of "Jura:
Island of Deer", while Gordon Wright was well-known for his numerous
local monographs and pamphlets about Jura culture and history.
Both individuals collected numerous hand-written family trees
(literally, in the hundreds) from families of some of the most
well-known surnames of Jura and much of this information is unobtainable from any other source.
As well may be imagined, due to
the depth and breadth of the detail in such hand-written documents, it
is very time-consuming to convert the analogue (paper) documents into a
digital format (we use Family Treemaker software and back-up data in
the generic gen format). Still, our general target is to convert
at least two documents into a digital format every week.
We will send individual files
on CD-ROM format to any off-island requestor at the rate of 10 pounds
(20 dollars US),
postage included. Unfortunately, we do not do FTP (File transfer
protocol) or email attachments of this data due to internet security
issues and copyright. However, each CDROM ordered will contain
several high resolution digital images from the Jura Landscape
Photography Archive concerning the areas where the requested family
name resided. These images are worth approximately 30 pounds (55
dollars) each and add
immeasurable value to the data of any genealogist interested in the
Isle of Jura.

. Remember, genealogical research is more than just birth and
death dates. Its also information from maps, personal papers,
photographs, maps, out of print books and more. The FSC is the
premeire archive of information about the Isle of Jura. We don't "do"
Islay, we don't do "Gigha", nor "Colonsay", we just "do" Jura, very
well. So contact us for your research needs.
